Spotlight: Kenya

The principle aim of the Global Communication and Marketing projects in Kenya is to enhance the region's ability to apply communication and health marketing approaches, as needed, to public health activities and to be prepared to detect and response to emerging diseases through rapid, nationwide health communication. In Kenya, a new information and communication technology network is being developed in Provincial Medical Offices and Provincial Hospitals and piloted through hospital infection control trainings.

From September 22 – October 5, 2007, the Global Communication and Marketing team lead for Africa traveled to Kenya to monitor the progress of the team's Global Disease Detection funded pilot projects. Options for communication and training dissemination were presented to infection control facilitators for Kenya's provincial hospitals. Messages were tested to develop communications materials for infection control for health care staff in the provincial hospitals. Collaborative planning sessions were carried out with the African Medical and Research Foundation* (AMREF) for e-learning collaboration. AMREF has been a very strong and valuable local partner, with demonstrated commitment of embracing e-tools to communicate health information to a widely distributed health workforce.

A health communication partners meeting was carried out with representatives from Kenya's Ministry of Health Divisions of Nursing and Health Promotion, the Kenya Medical Training College, AMREF, and CDC-Kenya. All partners have proven to be strong collaborators, deeply committed to using information communication technologies to extend quality of care throughout Kenya's provinces. In November, a Train the Trainer workshop for infection control nurses and doctors from the provincial hospitals is scheduled.
