Recreation Facility Analysis

What is the Recreation Facility Analysis?

Recreation Facility Analysis (RFA) is a nationwide Forest Service process to help National Forests better manage recreation infrastructure. Recreation Facility Analysis is the first nationally consistent analytical process that allows us to know what running a recreation site costs, the relative importance of that site, and its condition.

The foundation of any effort for improvement is knowing how well we are doing - establishing a baseline.  RFA gives recreation managers good information to enable them to develop a Forest level program of work to operate and maintain a financially

sustainable and "niche-focused" recreation site program that meets national quality standards.

The value of recreation is so great and the benefits to communities, families, and individuals so vital that we must continue to do all we can to improve access and availability of quality outdoor recreation for everyone.

Using this analysis, the Superior National Forest has built a five year Proposed Program of Work, a list of tasks that the Forest will try to accomplish or further explore over the next five years. The program of work is designed to be flexible enough to be adapted annually to any changes in demand, available resources, and opportunities.

Our goal is to provide healthy, safe, and well maintained recreation opportunities that are important to the local communities and visitors to our area. Recreation Facility Analysis is designed to evaluate developed recreation sites to meet the overall goals of:

Improving customer satisfaction.
Providing recreation opportunities consistent with each Forest 's recreation niche.
Operating and maintaining a financially sustainable recreation site program to accepted quality standards.
Eliminating deferred maintenance at recreation sites.

Many of our facilities were built more than 30 years ago and have matured over time. Some sites receive little use and no longer serve the need that existed in years past.

We welcome your comments and suggestions on our five-year Proposed Program of Work.
