This evening panel is sure to provide fireworks to end your day. Top scientists and premiere journalists will go head to head. Reporters need plain talk. Scientists need details. Reporters need overviews. Scientists need caveats. You get the idea. Audience participation will be unscripted and decidedly not peer reviewed as we investigate how to make this relationship work. This interactive debate will be co-moderated by Jeff Burnside of NBC's WTVJ in Miami and Nancy Baron, COMPASS' Ocean Science Outreach Director. The discussion will be continued afterwards over light hors d'oeuvres and drinks. This will be the place to meet and mingle with journalists attending ICRS.

Policy makers and managers involved in marine managed areas are constantly making crucial decisions that affect their constituency and the environment. They need user-friendly planning and management tools to guide them in making decisions. A computer-based model called MIDAS (Marine Integrated Decision Analysis System) is such an emerging tool. This predictive model will help managers and policy makers to understand and assess the MPA management effectiveness. The purpose of this 2-hour workshop is to gather managers and scientists to validate a predictive model for key socio-economic, governance and ecological effects of MPAs.

Draft Agenda

The International Coral Reef Initiative is a unique public-private partnership that brings together governments, international organisations, scientific entities and non-governmental organisations committed to reversing the global degradation of coral reefs and related ecosystems, such as mangrove forests and seagrass meadows, by promoting the conservation and sustainable use of these resources for future generations.

Since its establishment in 1995, ICRI has been a driving force behind scientific, governmental and civil society efforts to protect coral reefs and related ecosystems. The ICRI approach is to provide a platform for information sharing, as well as to mobilize governments and a wide range of other stakeholders in an effort to improve management practices, increase capacity and political support, and share information on the health of these fragile ecosystems. In particular, ICRI aims to catalyze action that will:

• Improve management practices,
• Increase capacity and political support; and
• Share information on the health of these ecosystems

ICRI will be hosting a meeting immediately following the 11th ICRS, on the 12th and 13th July 2008. The ICRI General Meeting: this is the principal forum for members of the Initiative to meet and progress discussions relating to the international coral reef agenda. The membership will receive reports from partners and committees on recent activities and review ICRS outcomes to determine where ICRI might focus in the future.
