AM Online: Streaming Science of Entomological Presentations

AM Online 2008

AM Online 08 is now online and ready for viewing. If you were an attendee at the meeting, please click here to access the presentations and scientific program from the 2008 meeting. You'll need to have your ESA ID number and last name to access the files. These were provided to you in an email from the Confex service vendor. If you need your login information again, please contact The Confex Help Desk.

A New Way to Appreciate the ESA Annual Meeting

Scientific sessions at ESA’s Annual Meeting again will be recorded and freely available to all registered attendees on the Internet after the meeting concludes. Posters will be included in AM Online and a special area for feedback from viewers will be part of each presentation.

First introduced by ESA at the 2004 meeting, AM Online offers online streaming media of the full text, audio, and static PowerPoint slides or poster text. Poster presenters may submit PDFs, PowerPoint slides, and .jpg and .gif uploads. A site will be available prior to the Meeting for all presenters to upload their presentations. Attendees can view a presentation they missed or get a second look at a particularly interesting one. The streaming format means that text files and photos are secure, protecting the integrity and format of the presenter's work.

The presenter’s permission is the only restriction as to what will be available in AM Online each year. This new technology will capture every screen in an oral PowerPoint presentation (or every text/graphics page in a poster), and will be synchronized with the presenter’s voice and mouse pointing activity for oral presentations. When the oral presentation is loaded into a file manager system, the presenter will be asked for permission to be recorded. After the meeting, all attendees will be sent instructions for logging into the site and will be able to view the presentations and offer feedback where they feel it is appropriate.

This service is free for all ESA members. Non-ESA members can purchase access by emailing subs@entsoc.org or calling 410-263-3622.

What is Included?

All presenters at the meeting are asked if they would like to participate in AM Online. If they agree, at the beginning of their presentation the recording begins. It captures audio of the speaker's voice, video of the PowerPoint slides (though not the slides themselves), and the movements of the mouse. The overall effect is similar to sitting and watching the screen during the presentation. The presentations are viewed using QuickTime technology. About half of the presentations from the 2004 meeting were included, and nearly two-thirds of the 2005 presentations are included.
