Historic Route 66 Back Country Byway

"Mainstreet Of America"

"Get Your Kicks on Route 66" has echoed for decades across America, and Arizona showcases 42 miles of the "Mother Road" from Kingman to Topock, at the California border and the Colorado River.

Thumbnail MapLocation

The Historic Route 66 National Back Country Byway begins five miles south of Kingman at the McConnico exit off Interstate 40. To begin at the southern end, exit off Interstate 40 at the Topock/Golden Shores. Switchbacks access Oatman and the mining community of Goldroad.

Description

Scenic beauty, history, and the bray of a distant burro await travelers to the area. Recapture childhood memories, visit the old gold mining town of Oatman, or see for scores of miles from the tri-state overlook. The opportunities are endless for hours of leisurely recreational driving. The road is legally accessible by any vehicle under 40 feet in length. Travelers are advised that the portion of the highway passing through the mountains is a very narrow two-lane with no shoulders, extremely tight switchbacks and many steep drop-offs. Wide vehicles and vehicles over 30 feet in length should use extreme caution when driving this road.

Best Season

It can be visited year round, but the best time is October 1 through April 30, to avoid the heat. It is advised that you contact BLM's Kingman Field Office or the National Weather Service for current road conditions and weather forecasts.
