TO HOLD SPRING CONFERENCE IN McLEAN, VIRGINIA
Secretary of Defense William Perry has announced that the Defense AdvisoryCommittee on Women in the Services (DACOWITS) will hold its spring semiannualconference at the Tysons Westpark Hotel in McLean, Va., April 17-21, 1996.
The DACOWITS is composed of prominent civilian women and men from throughoutthe United States representing the professions, industry, and public service.Members are appointed by the Secretary of Defense for a three-year term withoutcompensation.
The committee was founded in 1951 by the late Secretary of Defense George C.Marshall during the Korean war to assist the Department of Defense in therecruitment and retention of Servicewomen.
During the ensuing 45 years, thecommittee has provided useful advice to the Secretary of Defense on policiesrelating to the effective use of women in the Services, promoted publicacceptance of military service as a career field for women, and served as avital link between the Armed Services and civilian communities in relating theroles and accomplishments of military women.
The DACOWITS 1996 Spring Conference will be supported by the U.S. Marine Corpsand presided over by Ms. Holly Hemphill, the DACOWITS Chair.
The conference,open to the public and news media, will include an opening ceremony withSecretary of Defense William J. Perry as the keynote speaker, a generalbusiness session and subcommittee meetings with briefings and discussions ondiversity training, career progression of women in non-traditional roles,domestic violence, joint policies on sexual harassment, and the sexualharassment complaint process (schedule attached).
