Call for Volunteers to serve on the CDC/ATSDR Director's Commissioned Corps Policy Advisory Committee

As Commissioned Officers you know about the changes that have occurred in the Commissioned Corps and the likelihood of ongoing changes as part of the process for transformation of the Corps. In response to those changes and the concerns they have generated, Dr. Gerberding established the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)/Agency for Toxic Substance Disease Registry (ATSDR) Director’s Commissioned Corps Policy Advisory Committee (CCPAC) to help improve communication about the transformation and provide input on draft policies and the implementation of new policies.

The CDC/ATSDR Director’s Commissioned Corps PAC advises the CDC Director and helps the CDC Office of Commissioned Corps Personnel establish policies specific to CDC in those areas where the Office of Commissioned Corps Operations has not been specific, has not articulated a policy, or has developed a new policy for agency comment. The group reviews proposed policies, provides input about how the proposed policies would affect the Commissioned Corps workforce and CDC’s ability to carry out its mission, and proposes revisions.  In addition, the group reviews current and new policies and provides input about how those policies should be implemented at CDC.

The CDC/ATSDR Director’s Commissioned Corps PAC is composed of officers with a range of seniority, and representing the major officer categories at CDC.  The CDC representative to the Surgeon General’s PAC (currently CAPT Pattie Simone) chairs the committee. The ATSDR representative to the Surgeon General’s PAC (currently CAPT Sven Rodenbeck) is the vice chair. Meeting frequency varies from quarterly to monthly, depending on the number and type of policy issues under consideration, but has generally been monthly during this time of constant change in the Corps.

The members of the committee are selected from volunteers. One third of the membership rotates off the committee each year and new members are selected for a 3-year term. Officers who are committed to the Commissioned Corps and wish to contribute to the process of implementing Commissioned Corps policies at CDC/ATSDR are encouraged to apply.

If you are interested in applying, get your supervisor’s approval and send the attached form to CAPT Austin Hayes at the Office of Commissioned Corps Personnel (mailstop K-27). Forms must be received by April 30, 2005, for consideration.

For questions, please contact CAPT Pattie Simone (404-498-1201) or CAPT Sven Rodenbeck (404-498-0439).
