The National Archives: Guardian of Our Democracy

NARA holds in trust billions of pages of textual records; millions of still pictures; thousands of reels of motion picture film and sound recordings; millions of maps, charts, and aerial photographs; and thousands of electronic records files. Using slides, facsimiles, and other media, this topic provides a unique and fascinating look at the buildings, holdings, and special exhibits and programs of one of America's great cultural institutions.

IN THIS WORKSHOP OR PRESENTATION THE PARTICIPANTS WILL:

  • Engage in a document analysis activity featuring relevant records from the National Archives
  • Become familiar with the history, location, holdings, education and volunteer programs of the National Archives and Records Administration

This workshop meets the following curriculum standards:

  • DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA GRADE 7-12 STANDARDS
    • Grade 11, Content Standard 2:
      Students use varied methods and sources in research and writing.

  • MARYLAND GRADE 7-12 HISTORY AND POLITICAL SCIENCE STANDARDS
    • Political Science
      Indicator Statement: Analyze the impact of historic documents and practices that became the foundation of the American political system during the early national period.

  • VIRGINIA GRADE 7-12 HISTORY AND GOVERNMENT STANDARDS
    • Skills
      VUS.1 The student will demonstrate skills for historical and geographical analysis.

    • Virginia and United States Government
      GOVT.1 The student will demonstrate mastery of the social studies skills citizenship requires.
