Past Program Activities, 2003–2008
Arkansas, 2003–2008
From March 2003–February 2008, Arkansas received funding from CDC’s
Division of Adolescent and School Health to promote coordinated school
health, provide HIV prevention education, and conduct the Youth Risk
Behavior Survey (YRBS).For information on Arkansas'
current program activities, see Arkansas.
Past Program Activities
Promoted Coordinated School Health with an Emphasis on Physical Activity, Nutrition, and Tobacco
Use Prevention (PANT)
- Provided professional development opportunities to school
personnel, community nurses, prevention specialists, and health
department personnel for the purpose of using the School Health
Index and developing school wellness policies.
- Conducted workshops throughout the state for health education
teachers to develop and align their curriculum, including its nutrition and
physical activity components, with standards-based, skills-based health
education and assessment, to assist students in making the connection
between healthy choices and life skills.
- Collaborated with Community Health Nurse Specialists and Community
Health Promotion Specialists from the Arkansas Department of Health and
Human Services to sponsor workshops to educate state agencies, local
school districts, and area communities on the benefits of having a CSHP
in place in each school district.
Provided HIV
Prevention Education
- Collaborated with a nonprofit, community-based organization with
experience working with high-risk youth to provide training in
evidence-based HIV prevention curricula for educators as well as
members of the Juvenile Detention Association and the Arkansas School
Counselors Association.
- Provided professional development training for school health
education personnel on aligning the Arkansas health education curriculum
frameworks with materials from the Council of Chief State School
Officers Health Education Assessment Project, as they relate to HIV/STD
and teen pregnancy prevention.
- Collaborated with the CSHP to provide sessions focused on HIV
prevention education and health education assessment at the Summer
Institute. The Summer Institute brings together school personnel and
state agency/voluntary agency personnel to learn about CSHPs and provide
training and resources to assist attendees in implementing CSHPs in
their schools and communities.
Conducted the Youth Risk Behavior Survey
- Administered the YRBS among students in grades 9 −12 and students
in juvenile detention centers.
- Distributed the YRBS results to interested in-state and
out-of-state stakeholders.
- Used YRBS trend data to determine program planning needs,
particularly for juvenile detention centers.
