Healthy KidNorth Dakota’s Coordinated School Health Program (CSHP) is a collaborative effort between the North Dakota Department of Public Instruction and the North Dakota Department of Health. The CSHP works with schools, local public health units, multiple state partners, and statewide organizations to improve the health and academic success of North Dakota’s children through the implementation of CSHPs. North Dakota receives funding from CDC’s Division of Adolescent and School Health to promote coordinated school health, provide HIV prevention education, and conduct the Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS).

North Dakota's Program In Action

Promoting Coordinated School Health with an Emphasis on Physical Activity, Nutrition, and Tobacco Use Prevention (PANT)

  • Providing leadership to a school health interagency workgroup to facilitate collaboration among state agencies to improve physical activity, nutrition, and tobacco use prevention and support educational achievement for students.

  • Providing statewide CSHP professional development by sponsoring an annual health promotion conference, summer credit classes, and training events.

  • Working with CSHP demonstration sites on local policy changes and initiatives.

  • Establishing youth-based partnerships to address the needs of youth at greatest risk for inactivity, unhealthy eating, and tobacco use.

  • Evaluating program activities to assess progress towards meeting stated objectives and implementing CSHPs.

Providing HIV Prevention Education

  • Providing professional development for the members of the HIV/AIDS training cadre on HIV prevention education curricula and teaching strategies.

  • Providing leadership trainings in delivering HIV/STD prevention education.

  • Developing programs and policies geared toward youth disproportionately affected and at greatest risk for HIV and other STDs.

Conducting the Youth Risk Behavior Survey

  • Collecting YRBS data that are representative of students in grades 7−12 across the state.

  • Collaborating with the Department of Public Instruction, Department of Health, and other state agency partners to fund, administer, analyze, and market the YRBS.

  • Distributing YRBS state and regional reports to partner agencies, district staff, and community-based organizations via the Internet.
