Guide to Cultural Competence in Cancer Care Found to Be Valuable Tool for Health Care Professionals

On this page

Public Health Problem

In 2004, the Intercultural Cancer Council published an evidence-based cultural competency guide for cancer care professionals entitled Cultural Competence in Cancer Care: A Health Care Professional's Passport. Developed in partnership with the U.S. Health Resources and Services Administration's Office of Minority Health, this pocket guide is described by its authors as "an attempt to strike a balance between understanding and delivering culturally sensitive care to racial/ethnic minorities, while not stimulating stereotypic thinking about the group to which health care professionals are providing services in their clinical and private offices."

Program Example

Members of the Texas Comprehensive Cancer Control Coalition (TCCCC) found the guide to be of particular value for Texas health care settings, and have pooled their resources to print the guide for statewide distribution. TCCCC plans to disseminate the guide through state, regional, and local networks of health care professionals.

Implication and Impact

Through cooperation and coordination, TCCCC will reach more than 20,000 health care professionals with this practical and insightful tool. The guide will help practitioners to better understand and deliver culturally competent cancer care to patients who are members of racial or ethnic minorities.
