  • Baskin SA; Morris J; Ahronheim JC; Meier DE; Morrison RS; Barriers to obtaining consent in dementia research: implications for surrogate decision-making. Journal of the American Geriatric Society 1998; 46(3): 287-90. For a randomized control trial of palliative vs. standard care for geriatric patients with dementia, the rate of surrogate consent was assessed. Of the 74 patients eligible for the study, 4 surrogates refused consent, 41 surrogates 'could not be engaged' in informed consent, and 22 patients had no surrogate decionmaker, suggesting to the authors a potiential barrier to research using geriatric patients with dementia.
