  • Marson DC; Ingram KK; Cody HA; et al.; Assessing the Competency of Patients with Alzheimer's Disease Under Different Legal Standards: A Prototype Instrument. Archives of Neurology 1995; 52(10): 949-54. Fifteen normal older subjects were compared with twenty-nine patients with probable Alzheimer's disease (fifteen mild and fourteen moderate) to assess their competence to consent to medical treatment under five separate legal standards. Those with mild and moderate Alzheimer's disease may not be competent to consent to treatment due to their lack of both rational reasons for their choices and of understanding of the treatment situation and choices. Those with moderate Alzheimer's disease also displayed difficulty appreciating the consequences of their choices. [Source: Sugarman, J]
