A survey of Japanese physicians showed that while they generally are willing to give their patients sufficient information to give informed consent for both experimental and standard treatments, there is a prevalent attitude that disclosure is not necessary in many situations. For example, many physicians reported that it is appropriate to obtain consent from family members on behalf of competent patients and to remove cancerous tissue without consent.
