Researchers compared four formats of information disclosure (no discussion, an informal interview, a structured interview, and a structured interview with an information sheet) and concluded that structured interviews could improve patients' recall of complications. In this study of 190 patients undergoing otolaryngological surgery, patients participating in a structured disclosure interview (with or without obtaining the information sheet) demonstrated improved recall of possible complications, but did not differ significantly from other groups in their recall of the operation's name or explanation.
