  • Stanley B; Stanley M; Guido J; et al.; The Functional Competency of Elderly at Risk. Gerontologist 1988; 28, Suppl.(): 53-58. Thirty-eight elderly demented patients, forty-five elderly depressed patients, and a control group of twenty elderly individuals were examined for functional competence to make informed decisions regarding research participation. While quality of reasoning did not seem to differ among groups, cognitively impaired patients demonstrated poorer overall comprehension of consent information than did depressed and normal elderly individuals.
