  • Quaid KA; Faden RR; Vining EP; et al.; Informed Consent for a Prescription Drug: Impact of Disclosed Information on Patient Understanding and Medical Outcomes. Patient Education and Counseling 1990; 15(3): 249-59. Thirty-nine patients with a seizure disorder or parents of a patient with a seizure disorder were given information about the anticonvulsant carbamazepine, either by the 'medical practice standard' or the 'reasonable person standard.' As expected, patients who were given more information and who had higher education levels remembered a greater number of the side effects. Those patients who received more information about carbamazepine did not differ from the other patients in anxiety, treatment refusal, compliance, or number of side effects. [Source: Sugarman, J]
