Instruments measuring understanding, reasoning, and appreciation (acknowledgment of their disorder and its treatment potential) were used to assess decisionmaking capacity in a group of 249 patients hospitalized with schizophrenia, major depression, or ischemic heart disease. Schizophrenic and depressed patients performed more poorly than those with heart disease on measures of understanding, reasoning, and appreciation. [Source: Sugarman, J]
