In addition to an array of standard neuro psychologic tests, researchers used clinical vignettes involving typical treatment choices to assess the decisionmaking capacity among fifty-one nursing home patients. In contrast to the belief that physicians often dismiss nursing home patients' ability to make sound decisions, in this study, physicians often overestimated decisionmaking capacity.
