  • Epstein LC; Lasagna L; Obtaining Informed Consent. Archives of Internal Medicine 1969; 123(6): 682-88. Sixty-six subjects were asked to participate in a mock study regarding treatment of headache with a drug named 'acetylhydroxybenzoate' (a false name for ordinary aspirin) or placebo. Subjects received consent forms of varied length. Comprehension and retention of information regarding the study was great est when disclosure was succinct. In addition, subjects' reactions to the use of the term 'acetylhydroxybenzoate,' as opposed to 'aspirin,' illustrates that choices of terms and disclosure of risks has the potential to influence subjects' willingness to participate in studies.
