  • Mazur DJ; Merz JF; How the manner of presentation of data influences older patients in determining their treatment preferences. Journal of the American Geriatric Society 1993; 41(3): 223-8. A study of 166 consecutive patients in a university-based VA medical center were shown five pairs of 5-year survival curves for 2 alternative treatments, one with better short-term than long term survival, with varying short-term survival probability through the five pairs, and one with better long-term than short-term survival, held constant. The age, education level, and order in which the pairs were shown, either with increasing or decreasing chance of short-term survival, were shown to be factors in the decision for the short-term therapy. Patients under 65 and who were better educated were less likely to choose the therapy associated with a greater chance of short-term than long-term survival. [Source: SOTA]
