  • Lavelle-Jones C; Byrne DJ; Rice P; et al.; Factors Affecting Quality of Informed Consent. British Medical Journal 1993; 306(6882): 885-90. Comprehension and memory of informed consent information was assessed in 265 patients undergoing intrathoracic, intraperitoneal, and vascular surgical procedures. Patients' comprehension of information immediately after the disclosure of information was better than memory of it, and memory deteriorated as time after the disclosure increased. Those patients with advanced age, impaired cognitive function, and lower IQs tended to perform more poorly on tests of recall than their counterparts. Also, those patients perceiving their health to be outside their control remembered less information. [Source: Sugarman, J]
