An internship at the National Archives is an opportunity to participate in a first-rate, hands-on experience as it relates to your potential career and the knowledge you gain will be invaluable.


What is an Internship and Are You Eligible?

An internship is an occupational experience designed to complement the formal academic training of you, the student. Although internships at the National Archives are un-paid, they can be completed for academic credit, if you choose.

In order to be eligible, you must be:

  1. a U.S. Citizen
  2. currently enrolled, or accepted for enrollment at an accredited educational institute
  3. in good academic standing and your qualifications and interests should match the requirements of the internship project

You will also be required to complete a National Agency Check and Inquiry (NACI) background check.

What Is NARA And What Do We Do Here?

The National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) is a Federal government agency, created in 1934 to assist the three branches of Government with the cataloging and storage of documents. Today, NARA:

  1. operates a nationwide network of regional facilities at which staff accession, arrange, describe, preserve, and provide access to essential documentation

  2. is a leading voice in setting standards for archives around the world

  3. manages the national museum and library of every US president from Hoover to the present

  4. is a world leader in electronic records management and preservation

  5. prepares the Federal Register

  6. assists the Information Security Oversight Office in its management of Federal classification and declassification policies

  7. assists the National Historical Publications and Records Commission in its grants program

  8. administers the Electoral College
