Wright Brothers
The Federal Research Division (FRD) has been supporting the U.S.
Centennial of Flight Commission (COFC) since FY 2000, in preparation
for the 100th anniversary of powered flight on December 17, 2003.
Updating an earlier work by the Library of Congress (LC) –
Wilbur & Orville Wright: A Bibliography, compiled
by Arthur G. Renstrom and commemorating the hundredth anniversary
of the birth of Wilbur Wright (Washington: Library of Congress,
1968) – FRD provided the COFC with an extensive bibliographic
database on the Wright Brothers. The database provides the public,
educators and students alike with a wealth of information about
the written resources on the Wright Brothers available at and through
the LC.
In addition, FRD prepared for the COFC an electronic version (PDF)
of Arthur G. Renstrom’s Wilbur & Orville Wright:
Pictorial Materials; a documentary guide. This selective
guide to Wright brothers pictorial materials appearing in books,
periodicals and other pertinent sources was enhanced by FRD and
now includes links to the Library of Congress collection of the
Wright Brothers glass plate negatives, located now on both the COFC
and LC web sites. Finally, the FRD has been providing aviation history
data for the COFC feature This Day In History available
on their home
page.
