American President: An Online Reference Resource

The Miller Center of Public Affairs at the University of Virginia presents essays about Monroe and his life before, during, and after his presidential terms. It additionally provides biographical information about the cabinet officials that served in his administration, as well as a selected bibliography and information on Monroe's private and public papers.

Ash Lawn-Highland

James Monroe and his wife, Elizabeth Kortright Monroe, owned Ash Lawn-Highland from 1793 to 1826 and made it their official residence from 1799 to 1823. This site contains a brief biography of Monroe, a timeline, and a short essay concerning his views on slavery. It also contains information on visiting the estate and a virtual tour.
