INTRODUCTION
This is a brief guide to collections of major U.S. government
publications in the Library of Congress, originally prepared by
Jean C. Sansobrino and revised by Karen A. Wood. It is a highly
selective list of primary executive, judicial, and legislative
materials, including guides, indexes, report collections,
periodicals, and other sources dealing with federal matters.
The guide is divided into three sections:
* The first is an alphabetical list of the major government
and government-related collections with a brief description
of each.
* The second is a chart, also arranged alphabetically,
indicating the call numbers, dates of coverage, and reading
rooms where the publications can be found.
* The last part is a bibliography of reference sources giving
further information for identifying and locating U.S.
government documents.
Though some of these items are also available through the
general collection with their own call numbers, the chart only
provides the location of collected sets of material in the
following reading rooms of the Library of Congress: Law Library
Reading Room, Main Reading Room, Microform Reading Room, Newspaper
and Current Periodical Reading Room, Science Reading Room, and
Social Science Reading Room.
Some of the same materials appear in different collections in
different formats throughout the Library. For example,
Congressional bills and resolutions, committee hearings, committee
prints, and committee reports exist as separate entries; these
publications are also available in the various CONGRESSIONAL
INFORMATION SERVICE sets. Appropriate cross-references are made
for related entries.
Access to Congressional information files is possible through
the Library of Congress computerized data bases. These files
provide details on federal legislation since 1973, which include
the bill's content, sponsorship, status, public law number and
other relevant information. Computer terminals are available in
the reading rooms cited in this guide for access to these files.
This finding aid is intended primarily for the reference
staffs of the Library's reading rooms, although we hope that
Library readers also will find it informative and useful. Please
consult a reference librarian for any clarification or assistance
you may need.

CCH CONGRESSIONAL INDEX (KF49.C6; 1937+ ) - looseleaf service which
traces legislation by subject, sponsor, bill number, date of
introduction, companion and identical bill numbers, and also
contains a chronological list of proposed treaties currently
pending.
CENTRAL INTELLIGENCE AGENCY (CIA) PUBLICATIONS - unclassified,
internal, research reports dealing with foreign or
international economic and political affairs. Some CIA
publications indexed in AMERICAN STATISTICS INDEX are
available in its microfiche library.
CODE OF FEDERAL REGULATIONS (CFR) (KF70.A3; 1938+ ) - codification
of rules and regulations issued by executive departments and
agencies of the federal government. (See also CONGRESSIONAL
INFORMATION SERVICE entry.)
CONGRESSIONAL BILLS AND RESOLUTIONS - published texts of
legislation submitted to Congress for consideration.
CONGRESSSIONAL COMMITTEE DOCUMENTS - variety of studies and
reports, special congressional publications such as
directories and manuals, and annual reports of some
nongovernmental organizations.

CONGRESSIONAL COMMITTEE HEARINGS - testimony presented by witnesses

generally prepared for the use of a committee. (See also

or findings on matters under congressional investigation.

CONGRESSIONAL QUARTERLY (CQ) WEEKLY REPORTS (JK1.C15; 1946+ ) -
weekly summary of political activity including votes taken in
Congress, background information on topical issues, and
discussions of some of the activities of the executive branch.
CONGRESSIONAL RECORD (KF35; 1789+ ) - transcript, not necessarily
verbatim, of what was said on the floor of the House of
Representatives and the Senate; may contain remarks not made
on the floor, but inserted later (since 1978 these are marked
with a dot in the Senate transcript and with different type
in the House transcript); issued daily (J11.R7) and then
annually in the edited version; biweekly indexes until a
cumulative index is published for each session; the
CONGRESSIONAL RECORD has been published since 1873;
