State and federal recovery officials have approved more than $1.7 million in grants to reimburse California local governments for eligible disaster related costs associated with December-January flooding, it was announced today.

"The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) provides 75 percent -- $1,319,627 - of the $1.7 million," said Federal Coordinating Officer Tom Davies of FEMA.

The Governor's Office of Emergency Services (OES), provides 18.75 percent --$329,906 -of the $1.7 million grant amount and local recipients add 6.25 percent -- $109,969.

The grants are made under the FEMA and State of California Public Assistance Programs. The program, which OES administers, reimburses local government and state government agencies and certain eligible non-profits providing a government like service for eligible disaster related costs associated with a disaster. Among those costs are emergency protective measures, debris removal and repair or restoration of disaster damaged infrastructure.

Under President George Bush's February 3, 2006, major disaster declaration made at the request of Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, local government agencies in 30 California counties were made eligible to apply for program reimbursements.

To date, 445 Requests for Public Assistance from the 30 counties have been accepted into the program.

"We are moving on a broad front as quickly as possible to meet with the requestors and write up the documents that are the basis for reimbursements," said State Coordinating Officer Henry Renteria, director of OES. "The work is well underway and approved reimbursements are on the way to local government agencies."

The PA eligible counties are: Alameda, Alpine, Amador, Butte, Colusa, Contra Costa, Del Norte, El Dorado, Humboldt, Lake, Lassen, Marin, Mendocino, Napa, Nevada, Placer, Plumas, Sacramento, San Joaquin, San Luis Obispo, San Mateo, Santa Cruz, Sierra, Siskiyou, Solano, Sonoma, Sutter, Trinity, Yolo and Yuba.
