Freedom of Information Act (FOIA)

The Freedom of Information Act (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. ยง 552, gives any person the right to access records maintained by a Federal agency except those records protected from disclosure by one or more of the nine (9) FOIA exemptions or three (3) law enforcement record exclusions. The law also provides administrative and judicial remedies for those denied access to agency records.

Please consult the information on this website about How to Make a FOIA request as well as the DOJ FOIA Reference Guide if you plan to make a FOIA request to TIGTA for its records. Before making a FOIA request, you should first browse the Electronic Reading Room that contains information already available to the public.

We hope you will find this site informative and that it will give you a better understanding of the FOIA and its implementation by the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration (TIGTA).
