Development of the 2005 Dietary Guidelines—A Chronology

Sept. 4, 2003 The US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) publish in the Federal Register the official notice of the first meeting of the Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee (DGAC) and solicit written comments on the review of the Dietary Guidelines for Americans.
Sept. 24, 2003 The advisory committee holds its first meeting.
Dec. 29, 2003 HHS and USDA provide notice of the second meeting of the committee, and requests oral testimony and written comments.
Jan. 28, 2004 The DGAC meets. The committee considers issues including energy balance, fatty acids, nutrient adequacy, food safety, and alcohol.
March 30-31, 2004 The DGAC meets to consider issues including energy balance, physical activity, and fluids and electrolytes.
May 26-27, 2004 The DGAC meets and formulates major conclusions in areas including food choices, energy balance, fats, fruits and vegetables, whole grains, and dairy.
Aug. 11, 2004 The Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee meets. The committee formulates major conclusions in areas such as energy balance, carbohydrates, fats, selected fluids and electrolytes, alcohol, selected food groups, discretionary calories and food safety.
Aug. 27, 2004 The DGAC report is made available in the Federal Register. Public comment period begins.
Sept. 21, 2004 Oral comments from the public are presented at HHS Headquarters in Washington, DC.
Sept. 27, 2004 Final written public comments are received.
Fall/Winter 2004 HHS and USDA conduct internal scientific review of the advisory committee's report.
Jan. 12, 2005 HHS Secretary Tommy G. Thompson and USDA Secretary Ann M. Veneman release the final 2005 Dietary Guidelines for Americans.
