"This PSA provides the viewer a brief glimpse of some of the Monterey Bay Sanctuary's natural wonders - including spectacular wildlife and habitats - as well as the many human uses the sanctuary supports. This past year the Monterey Bay Sanctuary, along with its two neighboring national marine sanctuaries to the north - Gulf of the Farallones, and Cordell Bank - released new draft management plans, along with a set of proposed site specific regulations and a draft environmental impact statement. A public review and comment period was held between October 6, 2006 and January 5, 2007. Public workshops and public hearings were held last fall in communities up and down the coast, with approximately 500 people attending the hearings, and 160 providing oral testimony. Over 17,000 written comments were also received. This spring and summer the sanctuary program will be busy reviewing and evaluating all the input received on the draft plans, and will prepare a set of final documents that will include responses to comments. Congress will then have a 45-day period to review the documents before they become law later this year. The finalized plans will set priorities for sanctuary protection, education, research and monitoring for the next 5-10 years."
