Central Plains Region, Kansas City

Volunteer and Internship Opportunities Available at the National Archives in Kansas City, MO

Internship Opportunities

The Central Plains Region welcomes student interns. We invite undergraduate and graduate level students to submit applications for our voluntary internship program.

Interns at the Central Plains Region are provided with a broad-based introduction to the archives field. Students will assist staff in arranging holdings, performing basic preservation measures, and preparing finding aids and indexes; assist the staff in a variety of assignments relating to tours, educational programs, and exhibit development; and assist staff in providing reference services on textual and audiovisual materials to the public by mail, by telephone, and in person.

We ask that interns give 120 hours of service, which is usually accomplished by working three, 40 hour weeks. All internships are unpaid.

How to Apply

Internships can be arranged anytime during the year, and there are no application deadlines. There is no specific application form to complete. Each student interested in participating in the National Archives Internship Program should submit the following items which will be considered their "application":

  • a resume detailing educational and work experience

  • a copy of his or her official transcript(s)

  • a letter of recommendation from a faculty member

  • and a letter indicating why the student wishes to undertake an internship at the Central Plains Region
