Holiday Scenes from the parks - 1

Many national park units mark the holiday season with special events and programming, or festive decorations. A list of special events and celebrations follows. We invite everyone to come celebrate the holiday season with us at a National Park Service site this year.

November 15, 2006January 15, 2007

Harry S Truman National Historic Site, MO
Truman Christmas Exhibit: From the nine foot tree in the living room to the turkey for dinner, Christmas at 219 North Delaware was much like Christmas at any home in America.  Presents were wrapped, holiday cards sent and the tree was trimmed with colorful lights, glass ornaments and tinsel.  Like many of us, the holidays were a chance for the Truman’s to spend time with family and friends in the comfort and warmth of home. We are fortunate to have the complete contents of the Truman Home intact.  This time capsule of belongings helps us to better understand the Truman family’s everyday lives, including how they spent their holidays.  The artifacts here, even down to the scotch tape, are a part of their story. Everyday from11/15/2006 to 1/15/2007
from 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM. Free: (816) 254-2720.

Guilford Courthouse National Military Park, NC
Special Holiday Exhibit: Guilford Courthouse National Military Park has designed a special Christmas exhibit entitled, “Dickens’ A Christmas Carol: Society, Culture, and Need in the Early Victorian Era.”  This exhibit examines Dickens’ A Christmas Carol, especially its universal values and its emphasis on charity, goodwill, and family.  These values we now associate with the “Christmas Spirit” were, in large part, popularized by Dickens in A Christmas Carol, published in 1843.  On display are many artifacts of the mid-19th century.  Education, economics, leisure, and apparel are topics addressed by Dickens’ social commentary and by the exhibit.  It is our hope to bring in new visitors who will then explore our permanent exhibit and leave with a new understanding of the value and importance of Guilford Courthouse National Military Park.  The exhibit is open daily from 8:30 am until 5:00 pm.  For more information about this exhibit, contact the park at (336) 288-1776.

Fort Union Trading Post National Historic Site, ND
Engage’s Christmas at Fort Union: The Fort Union Muzzle Loaders, representing engage’s, will occupy Fort Union Trading Post, Saturday and Sunday, December 2 and 3, to reenact the role of American Fur Company employees during the winter. “Engage’s performed the basic manual labor of the trading post,” says fort historian Randy Kane.  They hauled wood and water for the fort, cut ice and performed basic construction duties.  During the winter, however, fort personnel were greatly reduced in number.  Those who remained were limited to basic survival.  In addition, there was little trading with the Indian tribes during the winter as they remained stationary in camps along wooded streams.  Pemmican was the food of survival in this environment.  Pemmican was meat and often dried berries pounded into a paste and covered with melted fat, then pressed into cakes.  Pemmican had several advantages: it could be preserved indefinitely, a good quantity could be stored in a small space, and it had great nutritional value. Over the weekend, visitors to the fort will be welcomed by a fire in the reception room of the trade house and treated to a cup of coffee or cider, biscuits, and taste of pemmican.  In the trade house, you can share stories with fur trade reenactors of life on the frontier of the upper Missouri.  Weapons, dress and equipments of the reenactors will be on display. Inside the Bourgeois House browse the fur trade exhibits and explore the fort’s fine book store.  Of special interest is the new publication, When Skins Were Money, A History of the Fur Trade, by James Hanson.  This is an excellent overview of the North American Fur Trade with copious illustrations by a recognized expert on the fur trade.  Soft cover, $24.95; Hard $34.95.  Brand new this year is the book, Buffalo Hide Tipi of the Sioux, by Larry Belitz.  This book is a reference manual, training guide and a how-to book with numerous pictures by an author with extensive first-hand knowledge.  Belitz has made a number of buffalo hide tipis including the one at Fort Union Trading Post,” says Kane.  Hard cover $26.95. Fort Union is located 24 miles north of Sidney, Montana and 25 miles southwest of Williston, North Dakota via Highway 1804.  For information call the park at 701 572-9083.

Holiday Music at Old Salem Church:
The National Park Service cordially invites the public to attend the twenty-second annual holiday music program at Old Salem Church on Sunday evening, December 3, at 6:00 p.m.  The church, built in 1844 to serve the growing population west of Fredericksburg, survived a Civil War battle in May 1863 that scarred its walls and woodwork with the marks of bullets and shells.  The National Park Service restored the old building during the 1970's, but much of the battle damage remains visible. The decorated and candle-lit church will come alive again with choral music in a program sponsored by the congregation from the new Salem Baptist Church.  The choir's program will include music performed in the old church during the holidays for more than a century, before the congregation donated the historic building to the National Park Service. Old Salem Church is located at the intersection of Rt. 3 and Rt. 639, just west of Fredericksburg.  Parking will be at the adjacent new Salem Baptist Church, which is only accessible via the eastbound lanes of Rt. 3.  The program is free of charge.  For additional information, call 540-373-6122 or 540-786-2880.

The house will remain decorated through the end of December, and the ranch is open daily except Christmas and New Years Days.  Call (846) 2070 x 224 or visit www.nps.gov/grko
