Based on this afternoon’s weather and vegetation conditions, fire danger at Point Reyes National Seashore and Golden Gate National Recreation Area lands in Marin County will be rated as "Extreme" again tomorrow, Thursday, September 4. The Bay Area Air Quality Management District has also declared tomorrow a "Spare the Air Day" due to a forecast of hot temperatures and light winds which will combine to produce poor air quality with potentially unhealthy ground-level ozone pollution.

Coastal Watershed Restoration Project Final Phase Starts Next Week
The park is initiating the second and final year of the Coastal Watershed Restoration Project, which includes replacement or removal of culverts and fish passage problems within the Drakes Estero watershed.  The project will restore natural stream process and improve fish passage in a number of creeks, which will benefit federally threatened steelhead trout, and potentially endangered coho salmon.

From March 1 through June 30, an annual closure of Drakes Estero is implemented to protect the harbor seals during this most sensitive time of year.  The closure applies to water sport users around harbor seal colonies in the area.  The National Park Service asks park visitors to avoid disturbing seals to ensure a successful pupping season.

"Broken Wings: Portraits of Non-releasable Raptors" Photography Exhibit and Artist Lecture
This photographic exhibit is open now through March 25, 2008 at the Red Barn Classroom at Point Reyes. The exhibition tells the stories of 20 raptors that cannot be released to the wild due to their injuries. These injuries illustrate a complex interaction between humans and natural world. The public is invited to attend the artist lecture, which will be on Saturday, December 15, 2007 starting at 2 PM.

On September 17, 2007, National Park Service Rangers and the Marin County Sheriff’s Office entered a marijuana grow site on Point Reyes National Seashore administered lands. The law enforcement effort confiscated approximately 3,500 marijuana plants with an estimated street value of approximately $9 million.

On Saturday, June 16, 2007, Vincent Au, 28, of Sunnyvale CA, was swimming with friends in Bass Lake when he disappeared. Despite significant search efforts, Au’s body was not recovered until Friday, June 22, when it resurfaced and was recovered.

On July 5th, a small brush fire broke out at the southern end of the Point Reyes National Seashore and burned 2.2 acres in total. The fire began when illegal fireworks were lit in the wilderness area, approximately two miles north of the Palomarin Trailhead.

From March 15 through June 30, an annual closure of Drakes Estero is implemented to protect the harbor seals during this most sensitive time of year.  The closure applies to water sport users around harbor seal colonies in the area.  The National Park Service asks park visitors to avoid disturbing seals to ensure a successful pupping season.
