Summary: The aims of this project are to: (1) identify the causes of preventable health care errors and patient injury in health care delivery; (2) develop, demonstrate, and evaluate strategies for reducing errors and improving patient safety; and (3) disseminate the results of the project's research and strategies throughout the health care industry. Researchers will focus on ten study sites throughout the state that includes priority populations (e.g., inner-city and rural areas, low-income and minority groups, women, children and the elderly).

Summary: This project will (1) expand an electronic medical records-sharing initiative for high-risk infants and their families in Mississippi, linking new health centers and clinics and serving a rural area that spans 17 counties; (2) use telemedicine technologies to enhance evidence-based developmental care for newborns in acute care hospitals; and (3) create Web-based decision support resources for physicians who care for infants. Patients in this study will include Hispanic or Latino and African Americans, ranging from birth to 3 years of age.

Summary: This study will develop, implement, and evaluate a cooperative effort using health information technology to facilitate a continuum of appropriate medical and developmental care for infants most at risk for long-term neurodevelopmental problems. The project will include development of a viable, cost-effective mechanism for information sharing, decisionmaking, and professional collaboration. Such a mechanism will ensure the benefits of early developmental care are attained during the inpatient NICU stay and maintained through developmental surveillance, once the infant leaves the hospital and enters the South Mississippi community care mainstream. High-risk infants, including Asians and African Americans from birth to 24 months, will be represented in this study.

Summary: The aims of this project are to build upon the research infrastructure and collaborations established during Phase I, with a particular focus upon engaging child care centers as research venues, to continue a systematic research agenda for identifying the best practices for the prevention of dental disease among very young children, and to develop strategies to use the MSBRIC childcare centers as a research model by which results may be replicated among other high-risk populations and similar sites in other underserved and/or rural areas. Both male and female minority children are included in this study.
