Philippines—Pharmacy Students

The Philippines Pharmacy Students
GHPSS includes data on prevalence of cigarette smoking and other tobacco
use, knowledge and attitudes about tobacco use, exposure to second–hand
smoke, desire for smoking cessation, and training received during pharmacy
school regarding patient counseling on smoking cessation techniques. This
information could be very useful in monitoring and developing the Philippines’s
comprehensive tobacco control program.
The Philippines Pharmacy Students GHPSS was a school–based survey of 3rd
year pharmacy students attending a representative sample of pharmacy schools
in the Philippines. The school response rate was 100% and the student response
rate was 96.1%. A total of 1,045 students participated in the Philippines
Pharmacy Students GHPSS.
Prevalence
43.3% ever smoked cigarettes (male = 63.3%; female = 38.1%).
22.1% currently smoked cigarettes (male = 37.8%; female = 18.1%).
4.7% ever used other tobacco products (male = 3.4%; female = 5.1%).
3.0% currently used other tobacco products (male = 1.7%; female = 3.4%).
21.6% of ever smokers smoked on school premises/property during past year.
11.0% of ever smokers smoked in school buildings during past year.
24.3% of ever other tobacco users used other tobacco products on school
premises/property during past year.
12.5% of ever other tobacco users used other tobacco products in school
buildings during past year.
Factors Influencing Tobacco Use
58.2% were exposed to second–hand smoke at home, during past week.
82.0% were exposed to second–hand smoke in public places, during past week.
81.3% thought school has ban on smoking in school buildings and clinics.
82.3% thought school enforces ban on smoking in school buildings and clinics.
70.0% thought school has ban on smoking in indoor public or common areas.
80.3% thought school enforces ban on smoking in indoor public or common
areas.
88.0% thought smoking should be banned in all enclosed public places.
87.6% thought tobacco sales to adolescents should be banned.
76.4% thought there should be a complete ban on advertising of tobacco products.
89.7% of current smokers wanted to stop smoking.
57.1% of current smokers ever received help/advice to stop smoking cigarettes.
94.0% were taught about dangers of smoking during pharmacy school training.
Role Model and Cessation Training
80.0% thought health professionals serve as role models for their patients.
99.3% thought health professionals have a role in giving advice about smoking
cessation to patients.
36.6% received formal training in smoking cessation approaches during pharmacy
school.
93.9% thought health professionals should get specific training on cessation
techniques.
Highlights
Out of 100 students…
22 currently smoked cigarettes and 3 used other tobacco products.
20 of 22 smokers wanted to quit.
>82 were exposed to smoke in public
places.
88 supported a ban on smoking in all enclosed public places.
37 received training to provide patients with cessation approaches.
94 thought health professionals should get specific training on cessation
techniques to use with patients.
