WASHINGTON, D.C.—Faleomavaega Elected Senior Democrat on House Subcommittee on East Asia and Pacific
 
       Congressman Eni F.H. Faleomavaega (D-AS) announced today that he was unanimously elected to the position of top Democrat (Ranking Member) on the Subcommittee on East Asia and the Pacific at an organizational meeting of the Democratic members of the Committee on International Relations.  The Subcommittee’s jurisdiction covers legislation and oversight of all foreign policy matters pertaining to East Asia and the Pacific -- including China, Japan, Korea, Indonesia/ Southeast Asia, Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific Islands. 

       “ I am extremely pleased to have been elected to this leadership position by my Democratic colleagues on the International Relations Committee.  The East Asia-Pacific Subcommittee oversees a vast and dynamic region of the world that is of enormous importance to U.S. national interests.  With over half of the world’s population living here, the Asia-Pacific region has become the center of global trade.  The region’s stability is crucial to America, as underscored by the presence of over 100,000  U.S. military personnel,” said Faleomavaega.

       “In the upcoming Congress, I look forward to working closely in a bipartisan fashion with Subcommittee Chairman Jim Leach (R-IA) to address the pressing political, economic and security challenges that face the United States from the nations of the Asia-Pacific region,” concluded Faleomavaega. 

       Faleomavaega also was named a member of the Western Hemisphere Subcommittee of the House International Relations Committee.
