WASHINGTON, D.C.—FALEOMAVAEGA MEETS TAIWAN REPRESENTATIVE TO U.S., DISCUSSES PAYMENT OF $200,000 BACK WAGES FOR CHINESE FISHERMEN

Congressman Eni F.H. Faleomavaega announced today that he met with Taiwan’s Representative to the United States, the Honorable Chien-Jen Chen, to review developments with the Chinese fishermen owed $200,000 in back wages by the Taiwanese firm, Kao Yar Fishery Company, which operates two fishing boats in the territory.

Taiwan Representative Chen indicated that, in response to Faleomavaega’s earlier letter, the Taiwanese Government had contacted Mr. Shiau Ing-Du, owner of the Kao Yar Fishery Company.  “The Fisheries Administration of the Republic of China (ROC) Council of Agriculture,” stated Representative Chen, “has urged Mr. Shiau Ing-du to settle this dispute quickly and effectively.  The Fishery Administration has also informed Mr. Shiau that it will take legal action and consider revoking his license to operate these two fishing boats if further delay on his part tarnishes our national image.”

Although the Chinese fishermen have recently departed for their homes in the Peoples’ Republic of China, Representative Chen indicated that legal action for payment of their back wages could still proceed against Mr. Shiau in Taiwan.

“I thank Taiwan Representative Chen and the Taiwanese Government for their assistance on this difficult matter,” stated Faleomavaega.  “To ensure that this reprehensible situation does not arise again, it is important for Star Kist to work with our local government to make sure that foreign fishing vessels doing business in American Samoa properly pay wages to their crews.”
