Congressman Faleomavaega announced today that he is
working with the U.S. Postal Service (USPS) to address the mail crisis
now facing the Territory as a result of terrorist attacks on America.
“In the aftermath of these attacks, the Federal Aviation Agency
(FAA) issued a directive which prohibits the transportation of mail and
cargo on passenger aircraft,” Congressman Faleomavaega said. “The
directive is intended to secure our Nation’s safety and the FAA is to be
commended for its swift, decisive action.”
“However, I can assure our local residents that both the FAA and
the U.S. Postal Service are keenly aware of American Samoa’s needs and
the impact this directive has had on the Territory. Both agencies
are continuing discussions on how to resolve this matter not only for American
Samoa but for Hawaii, Guam, and Saipan,” Congressman Faleomavaega said.
“At the moment, there is limited service to Hawaii via FedEx.
There is no adequate service to the Pacific Islands and insufficient airlift
via cargo planes,” the Congressman continued. “Alaska is also affected
by this directive as is much of the mainland. In fact, the U.S. Postal
Service is accustomed to using passenger aircraft to meet many of its delivery
needs. Needless to say, this crisis is national in nature and we
are working as aggressively as we can to find an expeditious solution.”
“I want to commend Senator Inouye for his leadership and thank him
for his continued support,” Congressman Faleomavaega said. “Senator
Inouye and I will continue to work with both the FAA and the U.S. Postal
Service to find a resolution that satisfies security requirements and provides
for our postal needs. I ask for our Territory’s continued prayers
and patience as members of Congress and Federal agencies work together
to restore peace and stability to America during this time of national
tragedy.” |
