JPlotLayout y axis

I have used JPlotLayout to construct a graph, using j2sdk1.4.1 running on
redhat linux 8.0. Everything works properly except that the y axis is not
displayed. Everything else about the graph is fine. Viewing the source for
JPlotLayout indicates that a y axis is added to the graph so I'm
perplexed. Has anyone else encountered this problem and found a solution?
