PURPOSE:
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Public Health Law
Program and the American Society for Law, Medicine & Ethics cosponsor the annual
public health law conference: The Public's Health & the Law in the 21st Century. The 2005 conference will focus on innovative legal tools for improved public
health with emphasis on information participants can use in day-to-day practice. The conference faculty will reflect the multidisciplinary composition of the
conference participants, exploring cutting-edge issues at the intersection of
public health and the law and presenting concrete examples of law as a public
health tool, both domestically and internationally.

The conference is intended for:
- Elected officials who make public health laws
- Public health practitioners and legal counsel
- Physicians and nurses in public health and clinical practice
- Emergency management and law enforcement officials

- All who are active in, and interested in, law as a tool for improved public

- Explain the critical role law plays in protecting the health of the public and
in strengthening the public health system for potential emergencies
- Describe practical approaches to applying legal tools to today's top-priority
public health issues
- Identify and assess scientific and other evidence for law-based public health
strategies, and
- Build partnerships with colleagues across professional boundaries

1. Three keynote addresses by prominent leaders in domestic and global public
health law and policy
- Hon. Mike Huckabee, Governor of Arkansas
- Risa Lavizzo-Mourey, MD, MBA, President and CEO, The
Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, and
- David Byrne, Esq., Special Envoy for
the International Health Regulations, World Health Organization, and former
European Commissioner for Health and Public Safety
2. A special plenary session on today's relevance of the 1905 U.S. Supreme Court
Jacobson v. Massachusetts ruling that addressed the balance between individual
health and community well being, and
3. 25 concurrent sessions on current and rapidly evolving issues important to every
public health practitioner, policy maker, and attorney.

Continuing Medical
Education Units
Accreditation
The American Society of Law, Medicine & Ethics is accredited by the
Accreditation Council for Continuing
Medical Education (ACCME) to provide continuing medical education for
physicians. This activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with
the Essential Areas and Policies of the ACCME.
CME Credits
ASLME designates this
educational activity for a maximum of 11.5 hours in category 1 credit toward the
AMA Physicians Recognition Award. Each physician should claim only those
credits that he/she actually spent in the activity.
Disclosure
To ensure balance,
independence, objectivity, and scientific rigor in this educational program, all
faculty are required to disclose to the program audiences any association or
apparent conflict(s) of interest that might be related to the content of their
presentations.
Continuing Legal
Education Units
ASLME is an accredited
sponsor of continuing legal education programs according to the regulations of
the states of AR, CA, GA, IN, IA, MS, MO, NV, NM, NC, PA, RI, SC, VA, WA and
WV. Under the NYS CLE Board "approved jurisdiction procedures", ASLME is
permitted to provide CLE credits in NY. ASLME routinely applies to various
other states. Attorneys desiring accreditation must notify ASLME upon
registering for the conference and must indicate for which state they are
seeking credit.
Continuing Nursing
Education Units
American Public Health Association Public Health
Nursing Section is accredited as a provider of continuing nursing education by
the American Nurses Credentialing Center's Commission on Accreditation. By
attending and evaluating approved sessions, APHA will issues a certificate of
attendance with indication of the total contact hours earned.
Continuing Certified Health Education Specialist
Units
The American Public Health Association is
accredited by the National Commission for Health Education Credentialing, Inc.
to sponsor continuing education for Certified Health Education Specialists (CHES).
This program is a designated event for the CHES (Certified Health Education
Specialists) to receive up to 12 Category I CE contact hours (CECH). By
attending and evaluating approved sessions, APHA will issue a certificate of
attendance with indication of the total CECH earned.

partnership conference entitled, "The Public's Health and the Law in the 21st
Century," June 13-15, 2005, at the Sheraton Midtown Atlanta Hotel at Colony

Exhibiting Details
The Exhibit Hall will be located in the foyer of the Grand Ballroom of the
Sheraton Midtown Atlanta Hotel at Colony Square. The foyer is a high traffic
area near the front lobby of the hotel where registration, breakfasts, lunches
and "Exhibit Breaks" will all be hosted.
Who Should Exhibit
Preference will be given to federal and state agencies, public and private
corporations and foundations, national health and law organizations as well as
publishers. Exhibitors should be interested and engaged in using law as a tool
for improved public health.
