A Harvard University survey conduced earlier this
month revealed that a quarter of people living in Southern coastal states
would likely ignore evacuation orders in the event of a hurricane.
Researchers surveyed 2,029 people 18 years and older who
were residents of coastal areas of Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, and
North Carolina. Nearly half of them had evacuated because of a storm. Sixty-seven
percent said they would evacuate if they knew a major hurricane was
looming; twenty-four percent would not, and the rest said they did not know.
Respondents cited confidence in the strength of their houses and concerns about
crowded roads and other evacuation dangers as reasons for
staying put. Of those respondents who said they would not or
might evacuate, 75 percent expressed confidence they would be saved or
rescued later.
