February
29-March 1, 2000
The
Congressional Research Service of the Library of Congress held a
special program, Informing the Congress and the Nation, in
conjunction with the Library's Bicentennial on February 29-March
1, 2000. The distinguished historian, Dr. Merrill Peterson, delivered
a keynote presentation on "the Great Triumvirate" of the 19th
century Congress: Henry Clay, John C. Calhoun, and Daniel Webster.
Informing the Congress and the Nation continued the following
day with two panels: a morning session featuring discussion by scholars
and historians on the ways Congress informed itself in the 19th
century and an afternoon panel of journalists examining the evolution
of the informing function in the contemporary Congress. A luncheon
panel of former members of Congress who worked closely with the
Library featured their perspectives on the interrelationship of
the Library and Congress.
This
program was made possible in part from a grant from the Teresa and
H. John Heinz III Foundation.
