As part of "Poetry in America: A Library of Congress Bicentennial
Celebration," the symposium Poetry and the American People:
Reading, Voice, and Publication in the 19th and 20th Centuries
was held on April 4, 2000. Panelists provided perspectives on the
historical context of poetry, the state of publishing, and poetry
as a medium of expression. The symposium was planned in conjunction
with a presentation by Robert Pinsky the previous evening of the
first 50 videotaped Favorite Poems to the Library. The symposium
was sponsored by the Center
for the Book at the Library of Congress, the Library's Madison
Council, the Library's Poetry
and Literature Center, the Poetry
Society of America, and the Academy
of American Poets.
