VA Hospitals Among the 100 "Most Wired," Resulting in Lower Mortality Rates

July 21, 2005

According to a new list published by the American Hospital Association's journal, Hospitals & Health Networks, several VA hospitals are listed among the nation's "100 most wired." The "most wired" hospitals, or those with the most effective use of information technology (IT), have, on average, risk-adjusted mortality rates that are 7.2% lower than other hospitals. One reason for this may be that the most wired hospitals use a wider array of IT tools that address quality and safety issues, including bedside electronic medication matching for patients, automated computer alerts and reminders, and electronic patient surveillance.

Among the 100 "most wired" hospitals are: Indianapolis VA Medical Center, Indianapolis, IN; VA Healthcare Network, Upstate, NY, Albany, NY; VA NY/NJ Healthcare Network, Bronx, NY; and the VA Palo Alto Health Care System in Palo Alto, CA.
