Bleijenberg G.
Chronic fatigue and chronic fatigue syndrome in the general population
BioMed Central Health Quality of Life Outcomes 2003;1:52.

Summary

The editor of BioMed Central Health and Quality of Life Outcomes asked Dr. Gijs Bleijenberg to write an editorial to accompany the two CDC articles Clinical Course of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome in Wichita, Kansas and Functional Status of Persons with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome in the Wichita Population . In his editorial he highlights differences of CFS as reported in clinical studies and population studies, such as ours in Wichita. He briefly discusses impairment in explained and unexplained chronic fatigue. He discusses the concept of fatigue as a continuum, in the context of clinic-based and community studies. He discusses why such a low proportion of persons with CFS in the general population has been diagnosed by physicians. He presents a critical commentary concerning the clinical course of CFS as seen in the general population compared to that reported from clinical practice. Finally, he has a brief presentation concerning the lack of association of any particular treatment with remission, in our study of the Wichita population.
