In 2000 the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences embraced the application of emerging high data content techniques with the establishment of the National Center for Toxicogenomics. In 2001, the NIEHS built on that intramural research effort by developing the Toxicogenomics Research Consortium to facilitate the application of genomic approaches to the Environmental Health Sciences. This effort was followed by solicitations in Functional Proteomics in 2002 and Metabolomics Applications in 2005. During this time, the biomedical field has rapidly accepted these technological approaches to the global assessment on biological processes and has begun to develop approaches for integrating across these levels of biological organization to gain true understanding of human disease processes. This conference will celebrate the contributions of these four activities to the development of their respective fields and point the way for interdisciplinary approaches to integrating the resulting knowledge and the translation of these findings into clinical and public health application.
