Metadata records help preserve the usefulness of data over time by detailing methods for data collection and data set creation. These standardized records greatly minimize duplication of effort in the collection of expensive digital data, and foster sharing of digital data resources through Clearinghouses and websites. This 1 ½ day workshop provides an introduction to the Federal Geographic Data Committee (FGDC) Content Standard for Digital Geospatial Metadata and the NBII Biological Data Profile, as well as metadata development tools, strategies for production, and clearinghouses. The Biological Profile encompasses the entire geospatial metadata standard and includes additional elements to describe taxonomy, methods, and analytical tools (such as models). Demonstrations and hands-on practice producing documentation for a sample data set will be done using Metavist software.

Title: Don’t Duck Metadata- The national geospatial metadata program. How does the realization that multiple agencies are working on very similar projects and the concept of coordination and collaboration spark the concept of data sharing? How does one learn if geospatial data exists, where to find it, how to evaluate it? The metadata program journey has had its ups and downs and encountered hazardous curves and rocky roads. Obstructionists and “nay-sayers” were plentiful. How does a small program overcome inertia to covet, protect, and internalize data? This presentation shares the progression of the program from duckling to fledgling stage and focuses on the program’s activities that result in successes in the federal, state, local, academic, and Tribal sectors. • The why of and what is the Executive Order? • “Corporate” metadata support • “Don’t duck Metadata”- the program • Stumbling blocks • Program successes • Performance strategies Sharon Shin provides leadership to metadata enthusiast representing multiple governmental levels, academia, private sector, and non-governmental agencies. Eight years in two federal geospatial programs has provided Sharon with many experiences, challenges, and successes. Sharon’s current role is Metadata Coordinator for the Federal Geographic Data Committee Secretariat. The FGDC is a program which spans across departments of the U.S. Government’s Executive Branch, the military service branches, state, local, academia, Tribal governments, as well as the private sector. Metadata elders told her “train metadata and see the world” and that it has. Spanning the U.S., partnering with federal Canadian agencies, and counseling international organizations; metadata has presented her with a passport of enriching encounters while training geospatial metadata.

FGDC Metadata Training Workshop
— last modified July 15, 2008 16:52
As one of the tasks sponsored by FGDC 08 CAP grant, we'll conduct metadata training to ESIP members during its summer meeting on 1) what is metadata and FGDC metadata, 2) how to create FGDC metadata, 3) how to get metadata created searchable through a searching engine.
— last modified July 18, 2008 16:17
Introductory Training: The introductory training will provide attendees with an introduction to the FGDC standard and FGDC compliancy as well as how to use various tools (e.g., a metadata implementation, templates, and editors [specifically the use of the EPA Metadata Editor]) to improve metadata production. This session will also introduce the North American Profile (NAP) of the ISO 19115/19139 standard and will discuss how it relates to the FGDC CSDGM. This session is designed for users who do not have a lot of knowledge about the FGDC standard and its structure or about creating an implementation, using templates or using the EPA Metadata Editor (EME). It is also intended for users who would like to know more about the NAP of the ISO 9139/19115. It does not cover why someone should develop metadata or what the business case for metadata is; it is assumed that most users already know they want to create metadata and need more information on that process.
— last modified July 18, 2008 16:17
Intermediate Training: The intermediate training will provide attendees with a quick overview of the basics learned in the intro course (FGDC CSDGM, compliancy, creating an implementation and using templates) and will then focus on advanced use of the EPA Metadata Editor, sharing information via metadata catalogs, and how to contribute to Geospatial One Stop. The advanced use of the EME will include a demonstration of how to modify the database for specific user needs. This demonstration will show the State of North Carolina’s implementation. It will also provide a detailed overview of how EPA set up their geospatial data portal, called the GeoData Gateway (GDG) to serve internal and external sharing needs. It will describe the configuration and the challenges faced in implementing an enterprise catalog as an example of how to implement a Portal Toolkit catalog and will feature a live demonstration of the site and its components. Other catalog implementations will be described and compared against the use of ESRI’s Portal Toolkit software. This training session assumes that attendees have a decent understanding of the FGDC CSDGM and how to create metadata.

Introductory/New EME Training: The introductory training will provide attendees with an introduction to the FGDC standard and FGDC compliancy as well as how to use various tools (e.g., a metadata implementation, templates, and editors [specifically the use of the EPA Metadata Editor]) to improve metadata production. It is also intended for users who would like to know more about the NAP of the ISO 19139/19115. It does not cover why someone should develop metadata or what the business case for metadata is; it is assumed that most users already know they want to create metadata and need more information on that process. The EME 3.0 training will focus on how to use version 3 of the EPA Metadata Editor. It will provide an overview of the new features and how they work. Specifically, this training session will cover the following new EME features: Using the new EPA Synchronizer to customize your metadata synchronization; Using the new EPA Metadata Validation options (batch validation, highlighting errors within the user interface, separating errors from warnings); Configuring the path to the EME database; Using the new help features; Adding multiple process steps; Changing compound element behavior; Entering user-defined keywords; Editing attributes; Entering multiple dates in the time period information field; Removing ESRI tags; and Using global search and replace.

Intermediate Training/New EME: The intermediate training will provide attendees with a quick overview of the basics learned in the intro course (FGDC CSDGM, compliancy, creating an implementation and using templates) and will then focus on advanced use of the EPA Metadata Editor, sharing information via metadata catalogs, and how to contribute to Geospatial One Stop.

This is a basic 2-day metadata workshop specifically targeted to tribal GIS or environmental professionals. We will cover the CSDSM version 2 (FGDC-STD-001-1998) including the Biological Data Profile as well as the coming transition to the new ISO standard. In addition, we will present two modules specifically tailored to tribal groups. The first is a module on a data security policy developed by the Coeur d'Alene tribe which is intended to help tribes maintain control of their spatial data. The second module is on the addition of native or traditional place names to the USGS GNIS database.
