Nicodemus, Kansas

An all Black Town settled by former slaves fleeing the south in 1877 after the Reconstruction Period had ended following the Civil war is located in the Northwest corner of Kansas. This living community is the only remaining all Black Town west of the Mississippi River that was settled in the 1800’s on the western plains by former slaves. Five historic buildings represent this community.

Climate

Summer daytime temperatures range between 80 to 105 F, nights 50 to 75 F. Winter daytime temperatures range between 0 to 65 F, nights -20 to 30 F. Precipitation can be light to heavy. Afternoon thunderstorms with lightning, hail, and gusty winds frequently occur during spring and summer. Winter snow accumulations are usually light, but heavy snows may occur. Weather can vary greatly throughout the day.
