California

The California Tuberculosis Controllers Association (CTCA) Theme for 2003: "TB Or Not TB: There is a Choice"

CTCA Leadership Awards were given to United States Senator Barbara Boxer and California Senator Don Perata for their work on behalf of tuberculosis awareness and control. These awards were presented at a press conference the San Francisco Public Health Department held in Chinatown with other speakers and including representatives from the Senators' offices.

Local television programming in San Jose on tuberculosis awareness held jointly by Santa Clara Health Department and the American Lung Association of Santa Clara.

A proclamation from Governor Gray Davis acknowledging California Tuberculosis Awareness Day 2003.

San Diego

The American Lung Association of San Diego & Imperial Counties has teamed up with the San Diego County Health and Human Services Agency Tuberculosis Control Program to present a free half-day workshop on TB and HIV on Monday, March 24 at National University in San Diego. Greeley

Indianapolis

The Indiana State Department of Health, TB Control Program will have a static display in their building lobby. Representatives from the TB Control Program will also be participating in a press conference being put on by the Indiana Public Health Association.

Kentucky

World TB Day Activities in Kentucky include:

The Governor of Kentucky will sign a proclamation declaring March as TB Awareness Month on Friday, February 28, 2003 at 2:00 p.m. in the State Capitol Rotunda. The TB Control Program from the State Office, a representative from the State Lab, and the TB Advisory Committee will be in attendance.

There will be two displays placed in the state office buildings from March 1 to March 31, 2003.

A press release has been given to the state of Kentucky public relations person for release to the media.

Maryland

Baltimore

On March 24th, we plan a simple display at the Baltimore City Health Department's (BCHD) Eastern Chest Clinic. As follows:

  • Display case of 2002 Baltimore City TB data.
  • TB information for the public.
  • Refreshments.
  • Mailer went to all Health Clinics and Program Managers in BCHD.

Michigan

Detroit

The Detroit TB Prevention and Control Program has the following activities planned for World TB Day 2003:

  1. Hosting a TB Open House on Thursday, March 20, 2003 in an effort for local providers to find out more about the Detroit TB Program and its services
  2. Radio PSAs to announce World TB Day 2003
  3. Media PSAs in local community-wide newspaper
  4. World TB Display including literature distribution within the Detroit Health Department

Missouri

Each year Missouri conducts TB Fortnight during the last two weeks of March in conjunction with World TB Day. During this two-week period events are planned and conducted around the state to increase the awareness of all health care workers in regards to tuberculosis. (While we traditionally target the last two weeks in March, due availability of dates, two facilities will have events conducted in February.)

This year while all event plans are not yet finalized below is a list of what has been planned to date.

February 18, 2003 - A one-day seminar at the Crawford County Health Department for physicians in the county to present information on the epidemiology of TB, diagnosis and treatment of active disease and infection, and to provide information on available resources.

February 26, 2003 - A one-day seminar at Whiteman Air Force Base titled “Tuberculosis and the War - What You Should Know.” Topics will include Tuberculosis in the World, in the United States and in Missouri; Tuberculosis Screening and Latent Tuberculosis Infection Treatment; Tuberculosis Disease and Treatment; and The Role of Public Health.

March 20, 2003 - Dr. Mike Iseman will participate in the Washington University Grand Rounds to discuss advances in TB Treatment.

March 24, 2003 - The Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services will hold a reception for all department employees to commemorate World TB Day. Refreshments will be provided along with activities based upon TB. TB Control staff will be present to answer any questions personnel may have in regards to TB.

March 25, 2003 - The Jefferson County Health Department will host a one-day seminar titled “Advance Topics in TB Control.” Topics will include TB Infection Update, TB Epidemiology, State Health Department TB Polices/Core Commitment Law, TB Disease Diagnosis and Management and case studies. This seminar is geared towards nurses in hospitals, nursing homes and schools.

March 27, 2003 - The University of Missouri Student Health Center in Columbia, Missouri will host a one-day seminar titled “Whippin That Ole TB.” Topics will include an Overview of TB, History of TB Control, TB Skin Testing, TB Skin Testing Practicum, TB Disease: Pathophysiology and Transition. This seminar is also geared towards nurses in hospitals, nursing homes and schools.

Eastern Missouri

The American Lung Association of Eastern Missouri has scheduled physicians to speak on a local radio talk show, "St Louis on the Air" which broadcasts March 24 from 11:10AM - 12 noon central standard time on KWMU.

The American Lung Association of Eastern Missouri also has events taking place during and around TB Fortnight. There are two nurses' seminars scheduled: March 25 (the Arnold, MO branch of the Jefferson County Health Dept) and 27 (University of Missouri, Columbia). In addition, there is a physician lecture (Dr Michael Iseman speaker) scheduled for March 20 Grand Rounds at Washington University.

New Jersey

The New Jersey Medical School National Tuberculosis Center will host the following World TB Day 2003 Activities:

Thursday, March 20th: Hosting a group of Moldovan physicians, health care workers and State Department staff; demonstrating our effective DOT program

Friday, March 21st: Dr. Lee B. Reichman, Executive Director, NJMS National TB Center will be addressing the Society for International Development, Washington D.C. Chapter. His presentation is entitled: Diffusing the Timebomb: Global TB Control Activities for the 21st Century

Sunday, March 23rd: 8:30 - 9:00 am Dr. Lee B. Reichman, Executive Director, NJMS National TB Center and Dr. Haydee Miranda, Division Chief, Department of Health and Human Services, Hudson County, NJ will be interviewed for: Garden State Matters, a half hour public affairs program for WWOR-TV UPN 9; Segment title: Tuberculosis a Global Epidemic

Tuesday, March 25th: Dr. Lee B. Reichman, Executive Director, NJMS National TB Center will give New Jersey Medical School, Department of Medicine GRAND ROUNDS- TB the Global Timebomb

Wed, March 26th : Dr. Lee B. Reichman, Executive Director, NJMS National TB Center will participate in a panel discussion entitled; Social Responsibilities and the Health Professions; sponsored by the Princeton TB Awareness Group: Princeton Project 55, in Princeton, NJ

Lancaster

Peer Health Educators at Franklin and Marshall College are sponsoring a bake sale to help support the global fight against TB. Stop by the Atrium and purchase delicious home-baked treats; the proceeds will be sent to StopTB, a "global movement to accelerate social and political action to stop the unnecessary spread of tuberculosis around the world."

Texas

Austin

On March 18, 2003 from 12:30pm to 2:00pm, the Global Health Council is hosting a forum "When TB & HIV Collide: Texas & Beyond" at the Hyatt Regency Austin, 208 Barton Springs Road, Austin, Texas. Co-sponsors include AIDS Services of Austin, American Lung Association of Texas, Global Health Council, Greater Austin Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, Pan American Health Organization, Texas Association of Business, Texas Department of Health, Texas Hospital Association, Texas Medical Association, University of Texas Health Center at Tyler.

On March 24, 2003 from 11:00am to 12:00pm, the Texas Department of Health, Room K-100, 1100 West 49th Street, Austin, Texas, will host an event to honor its partners in the community that make TB control and prevention possible. Topics include Community Partners: the Key to TB Elimination, World TB Day a Global Event, and Recognition of Community Partners. There will be a display in the lobby to bring awareness to tuberculosis and World TB Day.

El Paso

On March 24, 2003, the mayor of El Paso, Raymond C. Caballero, will issue a proclamation about World TB Day. A press conference will give information about tuberculosis and feature a mother and her child who were cured of TB with directly observed therapy.

On March 27, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) Division of Tuberculosis Elimination (DTBE) will observe World TB Day in El Paso, Texas and Ciudad Juarez, Chihuahua with a program featuring the U.S.-Mexico Binational TB Referral and Case Management Project. The event will be designed to educate key audiences about the continuity of care and expected treatment outcome improvements for TB patients crossing the U.S.-Mexico border who participate in the U.S.-Mexico Binational TB Referral and Case Management Project.

The U.S.-Mexico Binational TB Referral and Case Management Project is the result of a collaboration between CDC’s Division of TB Elimination, the Mexican Ministry of Health, the Mexican National TB Program, the U.S.-Mexico Border Health Commission, the Texas Department of Health, the California Department of Health Services, the San Diego County Health and Human Services Agency and its CureTB program, the Migrant Clinicians Network and its TBNet program, the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), the binational TB prevention and control project “Juntos,” the U.S. Department of Immigration and Naturalization Services (INS), Ten Against TB, the La Fe Community Health Center and many other partners.

On March 28, 2003, the Center for Pulmonary and Infectious Disease Control, University of Texas Health Center at Tyler, The Texas Department of Health, The American Lung Association of Texas, National Alliance for the Primary Prevention of Sharps Injuries, and AIDS Education and Training Center are offering an educational program "Update in Pulmonary and Infectious Disease" at the Region 19 Education Service Center, Paso del Norte Room, 6611 Boeing Drive, El Paso, Texas. The program includes the topics: Shots aren't Just for Kids; Changing Approaches to Treatment and Prevention of Tuberculosis; Hepatitis C Virus the Epidemic of the 21st Century; HIV 101: Recognizing HIV Across the Spectrum; Primary Prevention of Needlesticks Catheter Securement - A Case Study; and Appropriate use of Antibiotics.

Houston

On March 25, 2003, the Texas Department of Health, Public Health Region 6/5 South, Tuberculosis Elimination Program, is hosting a World TB Day Recognition Program from 1:00pm-2:30pm, at 5425 Polk Avenue, Forth Floor, Conference Rooms C&D, Houston, Texas. The keynote speaker is Dr. Jeffrey Starke, Associate Professor of Pediatrics, Baylor College of Medicine, Deputy Chief of Pediatrics, Ben Taub General Hospital.

Midland

On March 24-26, the Texas Department of Health TB Education Center, with the support of Public Health Region 9 and 10 and the Health Education Training Centers Alliance of Texas - West Region, is offering "Managing TB in the Community and Correctional Facilities." On March 24 from 1:00-4:25pm is the TB Skin Test Workshop. On March 25 from 8:30am - 4:40pm is an educational program including the topics: TB Overview, Epidemiology, Diagnostic Tools for the Evaluation of a TB Suspect, the New Binational TB Card, Screening Tests and their Interpretation for TB, TB in Correctional Facilities, Treatment of Latent TB Infection, TB Disease, Drug Resistant TB, Monitoring for Adverse Drug Reactions, Interviewing Skills and Cultural Diversity, Screening for HIV and TB, Infection Control, and Elements of TB Case Management and Reporting. On March 26 from 8:30am-12:20 pm is a workshop for correctional facility staff to focus on jail/prison concerns to include: TB Overview, TB Screening, Transporting Prisoners, "How Do I Protect Myself Against TB", and a Video, "I Wish I'd Known Then What I Know Now."

The American Lung Association of Utah will hold their annual World TB Day Conference on March 21st, 2003 at LDS Hospital in Salt Lake City, UT. The keynote speaker is John Sbarbaro, University of Colorado.

Virginia

The Virginia Department of Health, Division of TB Control will present the following program at various sites.

PROGRAM CONTENT

  • New TB Treatment Guidelines (CDC/ATS/IDSA)
  • Epidemiology of TB in Virginia
  • Presentation of the Traveling Spittoon Award to five health districts in Virginia with the highest performance score in achieving state and national TB Control objectives
  • Updates on projects completed by workgroups at the 2002 TB Nurse Retreat
  • Presentation of outcome and process evaluation objectives developed at the 2002 nurse retreat

PROGRAM OBJECTIVES
At the end of this World TB Day program, the participants will be able to:

  1. List at least six (6) new recommendations in the revised TB Treatment Guidelines
  2. Describe the demographic trends of TB disease in their region in VA
  3. List the outcome evaluation objectives developed at the 2002 TB nurse retreat
  4. List the process evaluation objectives developed at the 2002 TB nurse retreat

The American Lung Association of Virginia is releasing a press release in honor of World TB Day. The press release highlights the recent increase in tuberculosis cases in Northern Virginia and serves as a call to action for more cooperative efforts in tuberculosis control and prevention.

International Activities

Bangladesh

The National TB Control Program in Bangladesh created a fact sheet for World TB Day.

Canada

Stop TB Canada will be holding a World TB Day Conference: "Reducing the global impact of TB: Canada's fair share." The conference will take place March 23-24, in Ottawa, Ontario. The purpose of the conference is to present and discuss Canada's participation in the global fight against TB, and to determine how Stop TB Canada can further support Canada's role in fulfilling its G-8 commitment.

Malaysia

Malaysia will be holding WTBD 2003 on the 25th of March. It will be officiated by his honourable Health Minister of Malaysia. This year the event will be held in the state of Penang. Several programmes will be held on the day and days prior to the WTBD. Poster coloring competition, essay writing competition and quiz on TB will be held. On the launching day, the Health Minister will serve the last dose for a TB patient and he will be the observer.

Several cultural shows and choral speaking will be held on this day highlighting TB and DOTS. Following the launching of WTBD, exhibition of posters, activities of the NGOs and activities of the TB clinic will be held for three days in a busy shopping complex in Penang, Malaysia.

Romania

  • The TB Day 2003 in Romania is organized by the National TB Control Program and the Office for TB Control in the Balkans - World Health Organization. The following activities will take place:
  • Press conference and debates on TB Control in Romania with participation of high level stakeholders
  • The Minister of Health, the State Counselor of Prime Minister, heads of different agencies and NGOs involved in TB Control
  • TV and radio talkshows on TV channels with national coverage
  • Distribution of materials for TB day
  • All TB patients hospitalized or under continuation phase of treatment (includin prisoners with TB) will participate in small health education conferences to be held in the week 24
  • 31st March in the TB inpatient and outpatient clinics all around Romania and will receive brochures and T-shirts special developed for these activities.
  • National Contest on "The best slogan from a TB patient to a TB patient." All 48 counties (including Bucharest) plus the Prison Hospitals are enrolled in this contest. The best slogan/unit will receive a prize and the winner will make also a statement to be video taped. The best slogan in country will be selected during the week 24-31st March. All the slogans and statements will be used for a video tape to be developed later on.
