Provocation in Preservation

NCPTT is partnering with the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture, the American Institute of Architects Historic Resources Committee, and DOCOMOMO (Documentation and Conservation of buildings, sites and neighborhoods of the Modern Movement) to promote excellence in preservation design.

This competition invites architecture students to imagine the transformation of the 1942 Library and Museum of the Cranbrook Academy of Art to better accommodate the expanding collections and growing numbers of visitors. Designed by Eliel Saarinen, the renowned Finnish-American Modern Architect, and considered to be one of the most technologically advanced and aesthetically daring Modernist building complexes at the time of its completion, it is now a National Historic Landmark.

The challenge is not to adapt the buildings to fit current trends in library and museum design. Rather more ambitiously, it is to discover how the preservation of these extraordinary buildings can provoke a profound rethinking of our current conventions about design. The aim is to envision a new type of library and museum that would be unimaginable without the existing structures.

The deadline for registration is February 8, 2007.
